Simple Styling Tips to Always Look Good (All Genders)

Annie Malpass

All of us are affected by style and clothing in some way. The way we present ourselves through what we wear is, in a way, a first impression. It is a way to give others a quick glimpse into you because the way we dress usually reflects who we are as people. You do not have to change yourself to have style, let’s get that clear. Style should be a way to accentuate what’s already there, to highlight the good things about yourself, both body-wise and personality-wise. To say style is the idea of wearing jeans instead of sweatpants would be wrong. However, achieving “style” is way easier than most may think.

Dress for your body. Now you’ve probably heard this before, and that’s because it is no joke. Everyone’s body is shaped differently. This is not a negative thing, in fact, it is exactly the opposite. This means you have to find the clothing style that works the best with your body. I like to think that this part of styling is one of the most important because you must come to accept your body type, whether it be big in the hips or small in the chest. You must acknowledge and work with yourself. However, it can be an overwhelming idea because the majority of the time, stores don’t make it easy. If you are feeling lost, my best advice on this would be to research about different body types, identify yourself and search the internet for different brands who may cater to this.

French Tuck. The most simple and effective trick in the book: Tucking your shirt into only the front of your pants. A French Tuck is a way you can look put-together but with an air of carelessness. Doing this adds texture and a level of complexity to what you’re wearing, making your outfit a little more interesting. Everybody say “Thank you Tan France” (Queer Eye) for being the one to shine a light upon such an important form of tucking.

Balance your top and bottom. With any outfit you make, regardless if you really like fashion or not, it is important to pay attention to balancing it out. This, again, is a step that you can basically start right away because you don’t need to look further than your closet. It’s simple, you just have to pair pieces of clothing that are opposite in size– thus balancing an outfit by making it neither too oversized nor too skin tight. If you wear a loose shirt, try pairing it with tighter pants and vice versa. An idea anyone can try.

Fashion truly has no rules and you can take this article as you’d like. Remember, it’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it.
