Why Stockholm Fashion Week Was Cancelled.

Howe Sound Unmasked

By Annie Malpass

Recently in the fashion world, ethical and environmental fashion has been on the rise and supported by many. Though it seems as though the environmental impacts of fashion week have been kept on the down-low. Though this news came out about six months ago, I believe it’s important we talk about why it happened. The heads of Stockholm Fashion Week came to the decision to cancel its bi-annual event because of the negative environmental impacts it creates. You may be wondering, “How can an event that happens twice a year can have a detrimental impact on the earth?”. To be completely honest, this baffled me as well, but there is a lot more to think about then it just being a gathering to watch a live show.

Of course, fashion weeks are only a small piece of a big problem. However, runway shows with expensive brands set the bar for the rest of the fashion industry– setting trends and making you feel like you need to join in on them. Not to mention, it simplifies and displays the terrible relationship between fashion and the environment. Designers are flying their collections and sets to fashion capitals around the world and their fans are not far behind in their first-class seats. Swag bags, water bottles, big SUVs– all part of the attendance and the flex. The realization of the waste and how it looks with regard to the current environmental movement led the Swedish Fashion Council to re-evaluate their message and ultimately cancel fashion week.

Stockholm Fashion Week is setting a whole new example for the world of fashion, and it will be interesting to see who is next to join the movement and sacrifice the exciting week for a better cause.
